Making Art with Bacteria

Students from Bedford Road Collegiate and the Sask Polytech BioScience Technology program created "bacteria art" from bioluminescent E. coli bacteria.  These magnificent creations were displayed during the Nuit Blanche art festival for the public to interact with using UV lights.

Nuit Blanche:
Making Art with Bacteria

Saturday September 24th
7pm to midnight
Oskayak High School,
Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon
Picture
Art & Science have more in common than you might think. Both require curiosity, creativity, and technical skill, and both can seem like magic! This partnership between Nuit Blanche and Global Biotech Week – to celebrate art and science.

Nuit Blanche is a free, night-time arts festival that showcases and celebrates art and culture.

Sask Polytech BioScience Technology program students will use a (harmless) e.coli bacteria as a painting medium. When the paint is applied, it is almost invisible – but as the bacteria multiplies, magic happens!

The artwork will be on display at Oskayak High School on Broadway  Avenue during the event and students will be on hand to explain the process to the public.

Dr. James (Jim) Robson is Associate Professor in Human Dimensions of Sustainability at the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS), and UNESCO Co-Chair (since 2018) in Biocultural Diversity, Sustainability, Reconciliation, and Renewal. He conducts research in collaboration with Indigenous and local communities in Latin America and Canada on land use and environmental governance issues.

This talk is about the relationship between people and nature, about (Indigenous, traditional, rural) communities as global players in conservation and environmental stewardship, and how young people in these communities will shape what happens next in such places. I draw on experiences, observations and lessons learned from 20-odd-years working in and with communities across the Americas.
