EVENT DETAILS

To help us celebrate bioscience and its importance to our communities, we’ve enlisted the assistance of three researchers from the University of Regina. These incredible speakers will discuss their work and how it relates to Biotech in our own backyard!

SPEAKERS

6:15 - 6:35 – DR. ANDREW CAMERON
Many needles in a haystack: protecting animals by detecting new pathogens

Dr. Cameron is an Associate Professor in Biology and co-director of IMSS. He specializes in microbial genetics and pathogens.  He works closely with veterinary scientists, public health scientists, and partners around the world to advance technologies for detecting and identifying infectious disease outbreaks.

6:45 - 7:05  – DR. JOSEF BUTTIGIEG
Developing a trial drug for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis

Dr. Buttigieg is an Associate Professor in Biology and owner of a biotech firm at the University of Regina. He specializes in neurobiology and stem cell physiology. Spinal cord injuries, strokes, and multiple sclerosis are all areas of focus for his studies. He also owns and operates Fenek Farms, a local mixed farm operation that welcomes the public to experience farm life on a working farm.

7:15 - 7:35 – DR. ARUN DAMODARAN
Bioherbicide development for Canada thistle using bacteria

Dr. Damodaran is a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Regina. His current research is focused on studying eco-friendly alternatives to chemical herbicides.

VIEW POSTERS

Students, grade 3 to 6, are invited to participate in an art poster competition on the themes of biology/nature and pollution. Students will collect some (or all) of the litter (plastic bottles, food wrappers, straws, plastic/paper bags, bottle caps, etc.) they produce over a week at school* to incorporate into an art project. The art they create will be of something in nature – a plant, animal, landscape, etc. that could be negatively impacted by litter. Students are welcome to use pencil crayons, crayons, paint, and any other art materials for their project alongside the litter.

Teachers will then upload a picture of their students' art to the dashboard (on the AITC-SK website) to enter it into the competition.

* Teacher’s discretion on the length of time students will collect litter and if they can bring litter from home for their art projects.

All posters will be displayed on the Saskatchewan’s Global Biotech Week website. A panel of artists and scientists will judge the posters and select finalists in each age group. Prizes will be awarded to winners of the poster competition! Posters must be 11 x 17 inch (28 x 43.2cm).

Registration and poster application deadline is September 25th, 2023.

What is a synchrotron?
"A synchrotron light source produces extremely bright light by using powerful magnets and radio frequency waves to accelerate electrons to nearly the speed of light. This infra-red, ultraviolet and X-ray light is shone down beamlines to experimental stations where scientists can select different parts of the spectrum to "see" the microscopic nature of matter, right down to the level of the atom." LEARN MORE
